After Tooth Extractions

After undergoing tooth extractions, proper care is vital to ensure a smooth recovery and minimize discomfort. Whether it’s due to decay, orthodontic needs, or wisdom teeth removal, understanding and following these post-operative instructions are crucial for optimal healing.

Immediate Post-Surgery Care:

  • Maintain pressure on the gauze pad placed over the surgical area by gently biting down. Change the gauze as needed to control bleeding.
  • Keep your head elevated and limit physical activity to reduce swelling.
  • After 48 hours, rinse your mouth with warm salt water every 1-2 hours and avoid alcohol-based mouthwashes to prevent irritation.
  • Refrain from touching the surgical site and continue brushing other areas around it.
  • Use ice packs to manage swelling and take prescribed medications as directed.

Dietary and Lifestyle Recommendations:

  • Consume softer foods high in protein and stay hydrated, avoiding the use of straws for 5-7 days.
  • If you smoke, refrain from smoking for at least 3-4 days to reduce the risk of complications.
  • Be cautious of sudden movements and avoid strenuous activities to prevent increased bleeding.

Recovery Process:

  • Healing typically occurs within 3 to 14 days, during which sutures may dissolve or fall out naturally.
  • The tooth socket will gradually fill with bone, and adjacent tissues will smoothen over time.

Possible Complications:

  • Bleeding: Manage excessive bleeding with dampened gauze pads or moistened tea bags. Avoid activities that increase blood flow to the head.
  • Bone Sequestra: Contact the practice if sharp bone fragments protrude from the surgical site for proper removal.
  • Dry Socket: Seek immediate attention if you experience worsening pain, often indicating dry socket formation.
  • Lightheadedness: Stand up slowly and consume soft, sugary foods to regulate blood sugar levels and alleviate lightheadedness.
  • Numbness: It’s normal to experience numbness for up to 10-12 hours post-surgery.
  • Swelling: Apply ice packs for the first 36 hours, followed by moist heat to reduce swelling.
  • Trismus (Difficulty Opening and Closing Mouth): Jaw soreness and difficulty in jaw movement typically resolve within 3-5 days post-surgery.
