Pediatric Dentistry

Pediatric dentistry, formerly known as Pedodontics/Paedodontics, specializes in the dental care of infants, children, and adolescents. Recognized as a distinct specialty by the American Dental Association (ADA), pediatric dentists undergo an additional two to three years of intensive training beyond their general dentistry degree. Upon completion, they earn a unique diploma from the American Board of Pediatric Dentistry (Diplomate ABPD).

Some pediatric dentists choose to specialize further in catering to children with special needs, including those with autism, various cognitive impairments, or cerebral palsy. Integral to pediatric dentistry is child psychology, where creating a welcoming, enjoyable environment is paramount. Pediatric dentists steer clear of intimidating terminology like “drill,” “needle,” or “injection,” ensuring positive experiences for young patients, which can shape their attitude toward dental care for life.

Roles of Pediatric Dentists:

  • Education: Using models, interactive technology, and child-friendly language, pediatric dentists educate children and parents on maintaining strong, healthy teeth, fostering good eating habits, and implementing effective oral hygiene routines at home.
  • Monitoring Growth: By closely monitoring growth and development, pediatric dentists can anticipate and address dental issues promptly, preserving a child’s self-esteem and promoting a positive self-image.
  • Prevention: Through regular check-ups, cleanings, and preventive measures like dental sealants and fluoride applications, pediatric dentists help prevent tooth decay. They also provide guidance on habits like thumb-sucking, pacifier use, and smoking cessation.
  • Intervention: In cases of oral injury, malocclusion, or bruxism, pediatric dentists may recommend early intervention, such as fitting space maintainers or night guards, or scheduling reconstructive surgery.
