Wisdom Teeth Extractions

Wisdom teeth, scientifically termed third molars, typically emerge between ages 17 to 25, often being the last set of teeth to surface in the mouth. Positioned at the rear, both top and bottom, these molars earned their name from their typical eruption during a period associated with increased maturity or wisdom.

However, due to limited space in the mouth, wisdom teeth may fail to emerge correctly, leading to impaction—an unfavorable or potentially harmful positioning. Impacted wisdom teeth can trigger various issues if left untreated, including infection, damage to adjacent teeth, and the formation of cysts or tumors.

Types of Impaction:

  • Soft Tissue Impaction: The tooth’s crown breaches the bone but remains covered by gum tissue, increasing the risk of infection and decay.
  • Partial Bony Impaction: The tooth partially emerges, with a portion still submerged, heightening infection risks.
  • Complete Bony Impaction: The tooth is fully encased within the jawbone, necessitating more intricate extraction techniques.

Reasons for Extraction:

Wisdom teeth extractions are typically performed to address active issues such as pain, swelling, decay, or infection, or as a preventive measure against potential future complications. Leaving impacted wisdom teeth untreated can lead to damage to nearby teeth, cysts, tumors, infections, or tooth crowding.

Examination and Treatment:

Your dentist will conduct a comprehensive examination, often aided by panoramic X-rays, to assess the wisdom teeth’s position and detect any existing or potential problems. Early evaluation, ideally during the mid-teen years, allows for timely identification of issues and optimal treatment planning.

Procedure Overview:

Wisdom teeth removal is a routine procedure typically performed under local anesthesia, IV sedation, or general anesthesia in an office setting. After the surgery, patients receive post-operative instructions and medication, if needed, to manage swelling and discomfort.
