Crown Lengthening

Crown lengthening is a dental procedure aimed at improving gum tissue health or preparing the mouth for restorative or cosmetic interventions. It’s also an effective solution for correcting a “gummy smile,” where teeth are overshadowed by excess gum tissue. By reshaping or recontouring bone and gum tissue, crown lengthening exposes more of the natural tooth, resulting in a more aesthetically pleasing smile.

Reasons for Crown Lengthening:

  • Restoration of Damaged Teeth: Whether due to periodontal disease, trauma, or decay, damaged teeth often require crown lengthening to prepare for new restorations and correct underlying issues.
  • Cosmetic Enhancement: Excessive gum tissue can make teeth appear short and increase the risk of periodontal infections. Removing this tissue restores balance to the smile and enhances its overall appearance.
  • Dental Crowns: Crown lengthening creates adequate space between the supporting jawbone and dental crowns, preventing damage to surrounding tissues and ensuring the longevity of the restoration.

What Does Crown Lengthening Involve?

Crown lengthening is typically performed under local anesthesia and varies in duration depending on the extent of treatment needed. The procedure involves making small incisions to separate the gums from the teeth, providing access to the tooth roots and underlying bone. In some cases, a small amount of bone may also need removal to achieve the desired outcome.

After surgery, the gums are repositioned to expose more of the tooth structure, resulting in a visibly longer appearance. Your dentist will secure the surgical site with an intraoral periodontal bandage to prevent infection. Pain medication and antimicrobial mouth rinses may be prescribed to aid in healing and reduce discomfort.
